Congratulations Al Attles & Hubie Brown For Being Named Co-recipients of the 2017 Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award

I could not think of two coaches that are more deserving of the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award than Al Attles and Hubie Brown. One of my first jobs in the NBA was with Hall of Fame Coach, Chuck Daly, with the Orlando Magic. Coach Daly was like a second father. He had an incredible presence on and off the floor. I felt like he coached our coaching staff as much as he coached our players. He really let his Assistant Coaches do a lot of coaching during practice because he believed in not having his voice overheard and wanted his voice to be impactful during games. He was the consummate teacher and coach, so for anyone to receive this award named after him, is really special.

I had the opportunity to work with Hubie Brown during a Summer Nike Trip to France with a group of American All-Stars. He did an incredible job in our mini-training camp of teaching bits and pieces that built up to the over scheme by our first game. He was way ahead of his time in analyzing statistics. For example, one of the most important things he used to say was that your Small Forward must be a great rebounder. His attention to detail was incredible. He was prepared for every situation in-game. He had us practice everyday in-game situations. To this day, he is the most amazing situational game coach I have seen.

When I was a young, first time, NBA Head Coach with the Golden State Warriors, Al Attles would sit up top of our practice site and observe practice. He was a great resource to get his opinion on many different areas, both on and off the floor. He has such a calm demeanor. Because of all of the experience, he was able to be a great mentor without even knowing how much insight and guidance he gave me.

These two people are very deserving of the 2017 Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award. They have helped shape my philosophies as a coach, as well as many others, both on and off the floor. I am so proud to say that I had the opportunity to learn from both of them.

Al Attles and Hubie Brown are co-recipients of the 2017 Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award. The annual award is given by the National Basketball Association to a longtime NBA coach's life in basketball and his "standard of integrity, competitive excellence and tireless promotion" of the game.
