NCAA Adopts NET Ranking System

NCAA Adopts NET Ranking System

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee has adopted a new rankings system called the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET). The NET model will replace the Rating Percentage Index (RPI) and become the primary evaluation tool for Division I men’s basketball teams.

This model was approved in late July after months of consultation between the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, the NABC, along with the top basketball and Google analytic professionals. Using the 2017-2018 season as their sample to text the new evaluation tool, the NCAA states that this is a more accurate and fair way to evaluate teams on making the NCAA tournament.

The Pack staff has done some research on NET, although there are still unknowns and we are still learning, we feel as though we have a general idea of how it will work and effect us come March.

Here is a brief explanation of new NCAA NET formula and how last year’s and this year’s schedule compares.

NCAA NET Formulas

5 Key Components to Formula

  • Team Value Index
  • Most Important
  • Strength of schedule important
  • Team Efficiency
  • Teams average offensive and defensive efficiency
  • Points allow vs points scored per 100 possessions
  • Wins
  • Overall Division I win percentage
  • Adjusted Win Percentage
  • Giving rewards for road wins/neutral wins. Penalties for home losses. (similar to RPI)
  • Scoring margin
  • Capped at +10 and -10.
  • Overtime +1 or -1
  • **18 of 29 Nevada wins were by 10+ points plus in 2017-2018

“NET” formula is most closely resembled by ESPN’s current BPI formula.

In 2017-2018 Nevada’s BPI finished at #31 in the country.
