Mouse Traps

The Pack’s main focus for playing New Mexico was dodging all of their traps. Before Saturday’s game, New Mexico’s defense was averaging 18.5 turnovers per game (12th most in the country). The Lobos try to create turnovers with their full court press and traps.

Nevada’s biggest emphasis in preparing for Saturday’s game was not turning the ball over when New Mexico double teamed.

Coach Musselman used the analogy of the mouse traps to show his team that they were like mice, and need to dodge the mouse traps (New Mexico’s double teams) in order to get the cheese (victory).

Nevada defeated New Mexico 77-74 and did a great job taking care of the basketball. The Pack had 16 assists, only turned it over five times, and no individual player turned it over more than once. The team is now eighth in the country in assist/turnover ratio with 1.59, and point guard Lindsey Drew is 13th in the country with 3.50.

Nevada also had 9,530 fans on hand in Lawlor Saturday afternoon, which was the largest crowd of the season so far. The team plays at home again against Wyoming on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. All high school students can get into the game for free with their student ID.

The Time Is Now

The Wolf Pack had some creative motivation before their game at the Save Mart Center against Fresno State. Coach Musselman pulled out a clock, which instead of having numbers on it, had the word "NOW" written all at every hour.

"THE TIME IS NOW!" yelled Musselman. He told the team to stay in the moment, to seize the moment, and to play in the NOW for the entire game. He reminded Pack players not to think about standings, NCAA rankings, their past loss, or the high expectations to win the conference, etc. All Nevada had to worry about Wednesday night was one winning the next possession and staying in the moment.

The Pack was up by eight points at halftime, and again Coach Musselman reiterated the same message in the locker room: "The time is NOW! Stay in the moment."

The Wolf Pack ended up defeating the Bulldogs 80-65 in the Mountain West opener. The team will host New Mexico on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in Reno as they look to go 2-0 in conference play.
